Loosely based on the life of the director’s grandfather, A New Old Play begins when Qiu Fu, the leading clown performer of a renowned Sichuan opera troupe, passes away in an accident and reluctantly sets off for the Ghost City under the escort of two underworld officials. As he relives his vivid memories one last time before entering the afterlife, 50 years of art, struggle and love play out against the background of 20th-century China’s tumultuous history. Blending surreal fantasy with historical drama, A New Old Play paints a poignant, darkly comic portrait of art, memory, and survival, where tradition collides with the relentless march of time. A haunting elegy to vanishing culture, told with theatrical flair and deep humanity.
